I've been recording and producing music since 1982 — sometimes as a full-time professional, sometimes as a dedicated hobbyist working on my own projects between other careers. That's over four decades of hands-on time with mixing, across every era of how it's been done, whether or not it was paying the bills that particular year.

One session nearly broke me: 78 tracks of dense, cinematic material, so muddy and congested I almost handed it off to a professional mix engineer to finish. When I finally opened that exact session inside an early version of what became VisiStage, the problem was instantly, glaringly obvious. My instruments had heavy baked-in stereo delays — and my pan pots had been lying to me the whole time, hiding the fact that they were bleeding across the entire stage and clogging my center channel.

I didn't need better ears. I needed to turn the lights on.
